Managing Perennial Weeds
CCA CEU's are available for this episode
Pest Management CEUs: 1
While there are fantastic cultivators that can control many annual weeds, perennial weeds can be a big problem. Canada thistle and field bindweed can be especially tough because of their creeping and spreading growth habit, in addition to spreading by seed! Dr. Pat Carr has spent years understanding these perennial weeds in organic wheat, and farmer Will Glazik has managed thistle in his grain and grazing rotation. They will help us understand these weeds - the conditions they like and don’t like. Then we’ll discuss practical management strategies to manage creeping perennials, like crop rotation, tillage, grazing, and seeding density. Along the way we’ll also touch on general organic wheat agronomy. And of course you can bring your questions.
This episode will be useful for advisors, farmers, technical service providers, and anyone else who wants practical tips on managing tough perennial weeds, and deeper understanding of growing organic wheat.
This is a free Zoom Event!
SPEAKERS
Dr. Pat Carr
Dr. Pat Carr received his PhD in Crop and Soil Science from Montana State University in 1989. He worked as a cropping systems agronomist at North Dakota State University for 26 years, establishing the first research program focused on organic farming research in 2007. In 2016, Dr. Carr began his current position as superintendent at the Montana State University, Central Agricultural Research Center (CARC), where he is a professor of cropping systems. CARC has 47 acres of certified organic land where dryland organic research on grain (wheat) and seed (safflower) is conducted. A major focus of this work is on organic weed management and specifically the suppression of creeping perennial weeds (Canada or creeping thistle and field bindweed).
Will Glazik
Will Glazik is a second generation organic farmer and crop advisor in Paxton, IL. Will was raised on a mixed row crop and livestock certified organic farm before he studied Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois. Currently he is utilizing some no-till organic practices on his farm, as well as markets consulting for organic row crop and organic transition farmers. Will is a cofounder of the IDEA Farm Network which is a learning community for organic and conservation minded farmers in the Midwest. He raises corn, soybeans, oats and wheat as well as specialty grains like open pollinated corn and grains for brewers and distillers. It is Will's belief that the best way to increase organic acres is through strong, consistent domestic markets. Along with his brothers Clayton and Dallas, Will is a founder of Silver Tree Spirits, LLC.
Sam Oschwald Tilton, Facilitator
“I have worked with organic farmers all over the US and Canada to understand production systems and solve weed management issues. This past season, on farms and in winter conferences, I spoke with as many farmers and ag professionals as I could to understand the questions that organic producers have, and the experts that they’d like to learn from. Those conversations helped me identify the topics and guests for this series. I am excited to bring together a wide range of farmers and ag professionals from many backgrounds, all of whom have an experienced perspective to share. In each call I look forward to having an intelligent conversation with the guest that introduces the topic to those who are unfamiliar and also dives deep to bring further understanding and clear tips to listeners. After the conversation, we’ll take questions from listeners, so that they can communicate directly with each guest to get the answers that they need. My goal for this call series is to provide crucial information on topics facing organic and transition-curious farmers, in an approachable conversation that listeners can easily listen to during their lunch hour.”
“This episode is your opportunity to learn from a national expert about managing creeping perennial weeds like canada thistle and bindweed, that are a serious problem for lots of farmers.”
